The largest sports quiz ever held!

The challenge

The challenge is to set a Guinness World Record for the largest sports quiz ever held. The rules state that this has to be a minimum of 500 people, so we’re aiming for 600 just to be on the safe side! That in itself presented a rather difficult challenge of finding a local venue large enough to take that many people, seated. As luck would have it, Warwick School have kindly agreed to let us host the event at Warwick Hall – their brand new, state-of-the-art facility which opened in autumn 2016.

There are a whole host of other rules and regulations to satisfy the Guinness adjudicators which I won’t bore you with, but in simple terms, the event has to last at least 30 minutes, be filmed, be marshalled and, of course, be a sports quiz.

The event

The event is essentially a sports quiz. The first 30 minutes of the quiz will be more formal as we attempt to set the Guinness World Record. Once that part is out of the way, the quiz will continue in a much more informal and fun way, as you would expect on a quiz night. It will be a family-friendly evening, (suitable for children aged around 11 upwards) so we would love to see local schools represented. It would also be fantastic to see local sporting clubs enter teams, covering as many sports as possible. And it’s not just a quiz for sports fanatics – there will be questions on music, TV, film as well (with a sporting theme of course!), so anyone can take part.

We plan to spice up the evening with a select few local celebrities (subject to availability) and hope to make this event a night to remember.

As well as attempting a world record, the event will raise crucial funds for Myton Hospice and Jack’s Rainbow.

About the charities


I’m really passionate about this charity which was set up to help suddenly bereaved families create new memories after the death of a child. They are hoping to raise £25,000 (they are just over half way) to buy a static caravan in Cornwall to give families a place to spend some time to learn to smile and laugh again and create new memories, somewhere to escape everyday life completely free of charge.
This is a charity very close to my heart, as my daughter Ruby passed away in 2010 soon after she came into our lives. So I have decided to attempt this Guinness World Record in memory of Ruby and to help Jack’s Rainbow fulfil their dream.

Myton Hospice is a local charity, providing care for anybody with an illness that will shorten their life. This includes cancer but also conditions like heart failure, Motor Neurone Disease, renal failure or chronic respiratory disease.

As the only provider of inpatient hospice care in Coventry and Warwickshire, Myton pride themselves on supporting almost 4,000 people, whether patients or their families, every single year, free of charge. Myton’s three hospices are in Warwick, Coventry and Rugby. They have to raise £8 million a year to keep them running.

I know friends and families that have experienced the excellent care that the hospice offers and, having grown up in Warwick, I felt this was an obvious choice to raise some much needed funds for.

The rules

  1.  As part of registering on the night all participants must sign to say they have read and understand these Guinness rules – click here to view them.
  2. To register we need your name, age, email address (or phone number) and sticker number. Guinness may contact you later to ask about the event. We will only use your details to update you on future DesLovesSport events, unless you opt out of receiving future correspondence from us (see below).
  3. The Guinness part of the quiz will last a minimum of 30 minutes. The start and finish will be clearly communicated.
  4. Participants must stay in their seat in their zone and participate in the quiz for the whole of the Guinness attempt or the stewards will have to remove them from the count in their area. So please don’t go anywhere during this time!
  5. Your area will have a steward who will count the participants and ensure that the rules are being met. There will also be witnesses to check all the Guinness rules are followed. Stewards and witnesses will all be wearing designated clothing.
  6. The Guinness section must be videoed and photographed to meet their requirements and photos may be used in post-event publicity, so by participating you are agreeing to this.
  7. No mobile phones are to be used during the Guinness section or any later rounds. We can all Google the answers, this is a quiz to test who knows them. There will be some young children present, please set them a good example. Anybody using a mobile to find answers during rounds will be requested to leave and we really don’t want that to happen.
  8. The winning team of the Guinness section will be the one that scores the most points (only the teams that paid to enter will be eligible for the main prize of meal vouchers). In the event of a tie there will be ‘nearest the bull’ type questions until a winner is determined.
  9. In the event of any dispute the organiser’s decision is final.

Why the largest sports quiz ever?

We wanted to organise a fundraising event involving sports that a lot of people could participate in. This event seemed to tick all of those boxes!

What is the format for the evening?

Our anticipated timescale is as follows:

Registration: 6.00 – 7.00 pm
Welcome and introductions: 7.15 pm
Guinness World Record quiz section: 7.45 – 8.15 pm
Comfort break: 8.15 – 8.30 pm
Quiz part 2: 8.30 – 10.00 pm
Auction: 10.00 – 10.15 pm
Results and presentation 10.15 – 10.30 pm

Will it be an official Guinness World Record?

It has already been registered as an attempt. There are rules to follow which we will do our very best to adhere to. If we have over 500 participants and meet all of the rules (and assuming nobody else sets a larger record first) then it will be a world record. Everybody will be able to say they took part in an official record attempt which not many people get to say!

When will we know if it is a world record?

There is a relatively large cost attached to have Guinness officials attend, and as we want to maximise money for the charities we have chosen not to have an adjudicator on the night. That means we will have to put in a fast track application after the event so we should find out about a week afterwards. We will announce the result as soon as we know.

How many people can enter in a team?
A team consists of 4 or 6 people, but you can enter more than one team if you have more friends! Once we have reached the maximum capacity of the venue, we will start a reserve list in the event of any teams cancelling.
Is there an age limit for participants?

Guinness don’t specify one, but all entrants must actively participate in the quiz. We feel a minimum age of around 9-10 is appropriate, and in fact will be aiming to have some teams made up of school children, but please bear in mind the expected finishing time of around 10.30 pm.

Is this quiz just for sporting fans, or can anyone enter?

Anyone can enter, but the evening will have a sports theme throughout. We aim to make the quiz as enjoyable and entertaining for everyone though and aim to include some questions that non sports lovers will be just as able to answer.

Is there a prize for the winning team?

Yes! There are prizes for the overall winner of the Guinness part of the quiz, plus round prizes for all ther rounds. The first prize will be 6 x £30 meal vouchers for Cox’s Yard, Stratford upon Avon. All other quiz prizes, raffle prizes and auction prizes will be confirmed on the night. The organisers may limit the number of prizes a team can win to 3 prizes, just in case one team is dominating the quiz! We want to make it as fun for everyone as possible.

Will any sports celebrities be there?

We are inviting some local sports celebrities and will confirm attendance (subject to commitments).

Will there be food available on the night?
Snacks will be available (crisps, nuts etc). Unfortunately due to limitations at the venue, we are unable to provide catering.
What are the benefits of sponsoring the quiz?

Individuals or companies sponsoring a round in the quiz for £150 will have their information printed on answer sheets for all participants to see. We will also put sponsor details and links on this website and in press publicity where possible. The sponsorship cost also includes a team entry for 6 people (normally £60).

Will all the money go to charity?

All money raised will be split equally between the two charities, with the exception of a very few expenditures necessary for the Guinness part of the quiz (wristbands, stewards clothes etc).

What happens if I need to cancel my team entry or if one of my team members drops out?

Once you have paid to enter a team, we cannot guarantee any refunds. Please contact the organiser as soon as possible to enable us to try and fill your place. If any of your team members drop out but you still would like to participate, please contact the organiser and we will try and fill the spare places with any floaters we have on the evening.

Will money be refunded if it doesn't take place?

If the quiz is cancelled due to the weather or some other unexpected event, we would aim to rearrange it. If it can’t be rearranged, we would aim to refund all sponsor money and entry fees.
